Hedgehog Edge

The Hedgehog Concept is a business strategy concept developed by Jim Collins, a management thinker and author of the book ‘Good to Great’. It is based on the ancient Greek parable of the fox, who knows many things, and the hedgehog, who knows just one big thing.

The Hedgehog Concept states that an organization should focus on the one thing it can do better than anyone else, and align all of its activities and resources around that thing. This helps the organization to achieve a clear sense of purpose and direction, and to focus its efforts on what it does best.

According to Collins, the Hedgehog Concept has three components:

  1. The first component is what the organization is passionate about, what it can be best in the world at, and what drives its economic engine.
  2. The second component is what the organization can make a distinctive impact on, what it can do that no one else can do, or what is its unique opportunity.
  3. The third component is what the organization can economically sustain, what it can do that will be profitable and self-sufficient.

By identifying and focusing on the intersection of these three components, an organization can achieve long-term success by focusing on their core competencies and strengths, rather than trying to be all things to all people. The Hedgehog Concept can also be applied to us individuals in order to help us achieve personal and professional success. The concept can help one to identify their passions, strengths, and opportunities, and to align their goals and actions around them. Steps :

  1. Identify your true passions and what you are truly great at, and align your career or business goals around them.
  2. Understand the unique opportunities and skills that you have, and how you can leverage them to make a distinctive impact.
  3. Create a sustainable and profitable path by focusing on your core competencies and strengths, rather than trying to do too many things at once.
  4. Prioritize your effort and time to focus on the most important things, instead of wasting time and energy on things that are not aligned with your Hedgehog Concept.
  5. Create a sense of purpose and direction in your lives and career, which can lead to a higher level of satisfaction and fulfillment.

By doing the hard work of narrowing down your hedgehog concept, you find your “edge”. This is your circle of competence where you have the highest probability of achieving great success and fulfilment.
